Playing as a Guest
How to jump in without signing up, and the limits that come with it: data retention, the level cap, and how to carry over to a full account later.
You can start playing right away without signing up. Just press Play as a guest near the bottom of the login screen.
That said, there are several differences from a member account. Please read this page once before you start.
1. Your data can disappear
Guest data is tied only to this browser. Since we don't take an email or password, the only clue we have to recognize you is a single cookie stored in your browser.
So we'll tell you three things up front:
- Guest data can disappear at any time. We can't help with backups or recovery.
- If you clear your browser cookies, you can't return to your character. You also can't continue from another browser or device. (Once you sign up, you can continue anywhere from then on — see section 4.)
- Your data is deleted 30 days after your last visit.
We show you the same information once more when you start, and continue only after you confirm you've read it.
2. The 30 days restart every time you visit
The retention period is counted from your last visit. Visit today and it's 30 days again from today. As long as you come back regularly, nothing will be deleted.
You can see how long is left in the guest D-day indicator at the top right of the game screen. Press it to see this notice again.
We can't notify you when your data is deleted after 30 days, because we have no way to contact you.

Menus you can't use still appear on screen. They just carry a lock and a "Members only" label and can't be pressed — we show you what's waiting ahead of time, but you'll never press something only to find it blocked. Sign up and they open for your current character as it is.
The one exception is the Community Board's recent-posts widget, which doesn't appear at all. Those are posts written by other people, so locking it isn't enough.
You can climb the Spire, but you won't appear on the leaderboard. Guest records also don't show up in server news (the news ticker). This keeps records that will vanish in 30 days from taking over the rankings and news.
4. When you reach Lv.30
The highest level you can reach as a guest is Lv.30. Once you reach it, you stop gaining EXP and are taken to a notice screen instead of the game screen. You can still see your character list.
You can take the character you've raised so far with you, exactly as it is. On the sign-up screen, sign up with your Google account or an email address and your current account simply becomes a member account — not a single character, bag slot or Codex entry is lost, and only the level cap is lifted. There's no transfer procedure and nothing to choose.
We only ask if the Google account you chose is already attached to another account. In that case, once login finishes, you choose on the character select screen between Move to this account (brings your guest characters to that account), Leave and log in, and Don't log in (keep playing as a guest).
Two things to know in advance, though:
- Once moved, it can't be undone. The moved characters become that account's characters.
- If you choose "Leave and log in," you can't return to your guest character in that browser. The account isn't deleted on the spot, but with no way to access it, it disappears once the retention period passes.
5. If you'd like to start as a member
The First Steps page covers what to do in your first 30 minutes. To sign up, a Google account is all you need — nothing to fill in and no password to remember. You can also sign up with an email address and a password if you prefer.
As a member there's no level cap, every piece of content in the table above opens up, and you can raise up to 30 characters side by side. Above all, your data is saved to your account, so it carries on even if you clear your cookies, and on other devices too.
The full terms of use are in Section 5 of the Terms of Service and Section 2.3 of the Privacy Policy.
